The number of the house on 10th Avenue in Brooklyn where I grew up.  Memory has distorted the vision of my upbringing and the surroundings of the neighborhood.  My father so far away and my son who will never know what it is to grow up on the streets.

ANEMONE

A Greek legend says that the anemone was born after Adonis, beloved by Aphrodite, was killed in the forest on a wild boar hunt.  Aphrodite was so grief stricken that the gods took pity on her and allowed Adonis to spend each spring with her in the form of a flower, the anemone, rising from his blood.  We are looking up from the stem.  The light and colors are seen after it has passed through the delicate petals of this plant.

ARTEMISIA

Artemisia I of Caria who reigned in Halicarnassus between 484-460 BCE was an intelligent and courageous woman, who showed no fear in battles. She was respected by Xerxes I, King of Persia who made her an ally.  She plundered both Greek and Persian ships, and she seemed to be loyal to no-one.  She is mostly known through the writings of Herodotus, himself a native of Halicarnassus, who praises her courage and the respect.

GERMANICUS

Germanicus Julius Caesar (15 BCE –19 ACE was a popular and prominent Roman general, known for his campaigns in Germania. He was born a Claudia. He official member of the gens Julia, another prominent family was further consolidated through a marriage between himself and Agrippina the Elder, a granddaughter of Augustus. He was also the father of Caligula, the maternal grandfather of Nero, and the older brother of Claudius.  He commanded eight legions, about one-third of the entire Roman army, which he led against the Germanic tribes. He returned to Rome, where he received a triumph before leaving to reorganize the provinces of Asia Minor. His death has been attributed to poison by ancient sources, but that was never proven. As a famous general, he was widely popular and regarded as the ideal Roman long after his death.] To the Roman people, Germanicus was the Roman equivalent of Alexander the Great due to the nature of his death at a young age, his virtuous character, his dashing physique, and his military renown.

OPHELIA

Hamlet’s forlorn and childlike lover.  A young noblewoman of Denmark, the daughter of Polonius, sister of Laertes, and potential wife of Prince Hamlet.  She represents the dual nature of woman.  She was visualized by Hamlet as a callous sexual predator, when in fact she was virtuous and naïve.  Was she truly hiding her base nature under a guise of innocence?  A mystery then….a mystery now.

PIETA 4012 - Michelangelo Buonarroti

My teacher and I often wonder what renaissance and modern art would look like given the same time to age as Roman or Greek art.  When Michelangelo created the Pieta he wanted the world to know it was him.  On the sash it says

Michelangelo Buonorroti of Florence made this.   On the well situated above Christ’s head is a saying in Latin Vita non est de exspectans pro tempestas transere. est de docens quam saltare in pluviam. Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass; it is about dancing in the rain.

RENDEVOUS

A Norwegian three-masted schooner (built in 1905 to train Norwegian cadets) is plying the North Sea on its way to a mystical rendezvous.  Creating the waves are two figures from Boticlli’s Birth of Venus. The wind god Zephyr is in the water in this canvas and carries a young female goddess of lesser winds.  Both have wings. Vasari was probably correct in identifying her as "Aura", personification of a lighter breeze.  Their joint efforts are blowing the ship towards its rendezvous.

VENEZIA, LA REGATA SUL CANAL GRANDE

Third in the Venezia series.  The first historical record of the event dates back to the mid13th century, when it was part of the Festa delle Marie celebrations. The etymology of the word is uncertain, but it probably derives from aurigare, a verb used in the 16th century as a synonym for racing. Originally regattas were either races between boatmen and gondoliers or regate grandi.  The water parade commemorates the welcome given in 1489 to Caterina Cornaro, the wife of the King of Cyprus, who renounced her throne in favor of Venice.

VENEZIA, PONTE DEI FRARI
